Enhancement of the Interlaminar Fracture Toughness of a Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Using Interleaved Carbon Nanotube Buckypaper

In this study, a carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypaper was interleaved in carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness. Interleaving film of laminate-type poses risk deteriorating in-plane mechanical properties. Therefore, shear modulus and strength were measured prior estimating To evaluate effect on toughness CFRP, double cantilever beam (DCB) end notch flexure (ENF) tests conducted for mode I II delamination, respectively. No significant change observed due interleaving decreased by 4%. However, CFRP increased significantly. Moreover, 45.9%. Optical micrographs cross-section CFRPs obtained compare microstructures specimens with without interleaving. The surfaces after DCB ENF examined using scanning electron microscope identify toughening mechanism buckypaper-interleaved CFRP.
